World War Two started and Sophia's town was a bomb target. At night Sophia and her family would have to take shelter in a railroad tunnel and soon the town was evacuated. The family moved to Naples and stayed with some distant relatives during the rest of the war. Sophia was old enough to understand what was going around her. She would sit on her balcony and watch what was happening around her. She was not unaware of the horrors of war, but once the war was over she found something else to watch; the movies. She absolutely fell in love with what she saw on screen and wished that she too could one day be and actress. She didn't care about the fortune and fame she just wanted to be like the people she saw on screen.

Sophia was growing up and was now a teenager. She was turning into a beautiful young

woman and people were noticing. A friend of her mother's suggested that Sophia enter a beauty pageant. Sophia was reluctant and tried everything to get out of having to go, nut not of her attempts worked. Her mother made a dress for her out of old curtains and painted and old pair of shoes white. She was very nervous, but when she got on stage she calmed down and became confident; she answered all of the judge's questions without a problem. She wasn't named the queen of the pageant but she was named a princess one of twelve runners-up. This led to other pageants and other awards. One of these pageants was headed up by a film producer and he was very taken by Sophia. He got her a small part in a film and Sophia was paid about 1,500 dollars. When her father found out he said that he would sign the affidavit for her sister if Sophia's mother paid him 1,500 dollars. Sophia decided to hand over the money so her sister could go to school and would no longer be made fun of by her peers.
